Giant Polypore Meripilus giganteus

Good edible, tastes similar to Hen of the Woods. Found on stumps. Image

Micus,

Is there a book you could recommend to get a fella started on mushroom picking year-round? I know a bunch of us are missing out on some good eating during the summer and fall.

There are a lot of different good books out there. The one I use the most is the "National Audubon Society Field Guide To Mushrooms." A book on Missouri mushrooms is in production by MOMS/MDC but I'm not sure of the release date.

Never rely on a single source for identification of a new edible. I use at least three and often more sources, preferably at least one source should pass for human.
