Coyote & grayfox..Aug.17

Post by Swampbird » August 19th, 2005, 12:42 am

Setup on ATV trail into hunt unit area.
Image

Blew some rabbit distress sounds. Waited 2-3mins. and repeated. Wasn't long and this coyote came down the trail. At about 40yds, the Squeaker stopped him for the shot. He survived a steel trap, but the Ruger .22Mag did the job.
Image
Threw him out on a cut-over for the buzzards and headed for another setup

Setup on a curve and blew a series of rabbit distress.
Image

Caught movement on the hillside, across the creek, and a gray stepped into the trail and started to close the distance. He reached the top of the hill and the Squeaker stopped him. The Ruger M-77.22Mag spat the 2nd time within 20 mins and this gray went down.

Nice. There are plenty of coyotes, red fox and bobcats around here, but I haven't seen many grey fox. Thanks for the pics.

Also are you satisfied with the 22mag on preditors?

Awesome. Did you feel bad after you shot them.

dave-t,
Here in the "thick-stuff" of SC, the .22Mag has its place. I'm continually told the Mag isn't enough gun for coyotes, but I've never heard that from a 'yote.
I've hunted with the Mag since the late 70s and I haven't had a coyote run far, after proper bullet placement. Deer shot with .270 have run a lot farther.
Out west, the .22Mag would be outclassed by larger centerfires, but not on the gulf/eastcoast....

Thanks, if the shooter does his job, I see no reason for the the 22 mag to not be enough gun.

I here in either NC or SC the 22mag is legal for deer hunting, is that true?

No! The smallest caliber allowed for deer is the .243Win.

We have no restriction here in MO, it just has to be a cneterfire. I know of several folks who use 22 cal centerfires, I don't recommend them though. Image

Maine is the only state rim fire .22's magnums are legal on deer, that I know of.

Maine Statute: "Deer may not be hunted with the use of dogs, artificial lights, snares, traps, or set guns or any firearm using .22 caliber rimfire cartridges, except that .22 caliber rimfire magnum cartridges are permitted. Deer decoys are legal."
