What the helll....

Post by Outdoorsfool » October 5th, 2005, 11:01 am

are these flaming red toadstool-looking mushrooms that are coming up this fall? I've never been into fall mushroom hunting, but am out in the woods quite a bit. This is the first year I've seen this thangs.

Nope. Toadstool may not be quite the right despcription. It had a flat top, rather than dome-shaped,and no spots. It's color was flaming red...kind of like a sugar maple leaf in full fall color.

Nope. Shape-wise it kind of looks like the yellow version of what you posted above...just the wrong color. I found about 4 of them (not in a clump) at the edge of a small cedar grove. Tops were maybe 4-5" across and they were probably just as tall.

Without seeing them, if they have a white stalk & gills, I would look at Russula. There are a lot of them.

Close in shape/size Swamp but the color is off. The ones I saw were a bright red. I'll be back out there tomorrow evening will see if I can get a pic.

I think our resident expert nailed it. I think it's the Russula acicolocystis...top one on this page

I have seen a lot of them too. I think you are describing the Rosy Russala (Russala rosacea). Do they look like these?

If it has a white stem its more than likely the Russula aciculocystis but if the stem is red or rosy then its a Russala rosacea.

The one I posted is more fun....

"Poisoning symptoms... include heightened color perception, visual distortions, hilarity (hence, "big laughing Gym"), rage or mood swings, and hallucinations. Side effects can include nausea, vomiting, incarceration..."

Yeah, sounds like a barrel of laughs Swampy! Image Except for the hallucination part...that might be okay. Image

Ahistory - Honestly I didn't take a good look at the stems, but the color in the links you posted are too bland. The color on the cap more closely resembled the link I posted in shade and intensity.
