I agree with get rid of that thought, There are very few places where we can use a rifle out here (NY) and I wish they would open it all over the state!

In fact, I think they ought to do away with rifle altogether and go to slugs only like Illinois... Image

2BHNTN, you have strayed from the topic of this thread (Deer RIFLE for a yougster). This political and controversial discussion belongs in the Hunting Lodge.

Sorry, I couldn't resist throwing that in.... Image

Actually a good topic to discuss with probably a lot of differing opinions. However, so far it sounds like most are against it. Image Image

I've had the New England .243 for my son since he was 9 years old he is 12 now and it has done the job on each of the three deer he has bagged. Only one went anywhere and that was about thirty yards the rest dropped in their tracks. Put a pretty good hole in them.

i have a .223 and my son loves to shoot it but i dont think its verry good for deer hunting cause it would be like shooting a .22 at one and that just doesnt seem to be verry right bright my uncle has a .243 and my 9 year old shoots it like its a b-b gun plus its not as loud when he fires it

Bigdog, I think you have over looked one thing about the .223, that round is used to kill people by our military. I am ont saying you should use it for deer but you could.

My boy is 13. last year I bought him a H&R single shot in 270. He shots it well and it carries well. last youth season he took a fork horn at 93 steps. I liked the gun so well that I bought one for myself. durring the reg.season I took a 143 class ten point at 122 steps.

I purchased a Rossi .243 single shot for my oldest son over the summer. It can be converted to a .22 and a 20 gauge, so he can use it for small game as well. He has fired around 10 boxes throught the gun, and it performs very well.

He will be using the .243 this weekend with 95 grain for the youth hunt. I have placed our blind so that his longest shot will be under 100 yards. Not that this gun couldn't reach out beyond this distance, I just don't want him taking any shot longer than what he has practiced!

I had always been told the .223 was used mainly to maim, not kill. This was designed to lure others out to help the maimed dude in order to take more of the charlies out.
