New Boat question??

Post by Hunter91 » April 6th, 2004, 1:26 am

Not sure if this is the right subject to put this under. I got a new to me boat today. A 17ft 96 generation 3 boat with a 1998 90 hp Yamaha on it!!Big boat for someone used to a 14 ft jon boat. The engine fuel is to be premixed. It is not oil injected. Does anyone know offhand or have any suggestions on the mixture ratio? I will be looking for a yamaha dealer sometime tomorrow to tell me if someone here doesn't have any suggestions. Thanks

Be safe and check with your dealer. I mix at 1 pint of oil to 6 gal super premium gas.

50 to 1 is the mix for an outboard. Only buy tcwIII rated oil. The formula is on the bottle. I use quicksilver and have never had an outboard problem. I usually put a little extra oil in. smoke is better than burnt pistons.

Thanks fellers. I did check with a dealer and he agreed the 50 to 1 ratio. Tried it out this evening at the rock. Ran like a top.

Sounds like you got this thing whupped pretty good. Rainbow is right on when he says a little smoke is better than burned pistons. If you do a lot of low speed idling, you might want to check for carbon on your plugs from time to time, also. Normal use with mostly high speed running should keep the carbon from building up.

CW,it's funny you should mention plugs. Or not funny. Image
My Yammie wouldn't come out of the hole sat am. Acted like it was full of water or something. I kept it hammered, and when it did come out, it would only turn 4200 rpm. Turned out to be plugs, thank goodness. Still cost me 2hrs fishing in the rain and a trip to Cassville. Image
Hunter91, Congrats on the new rig. Your Yammie is made to run on reg unleaded. I think you'll like it. Have fun!

Talkin about plugs, I blew my motor up Sat. during a Tourney, burnt the No. 3 piston, cracked the block and ruined the crankshaft, all in about 1 minute, I hope the insurance will cover it but I won't hold my breath, if the don't it's going to be about 5 grand to get it back.:( Image But the good thing is if there is a good thing we did take 2nd in the tourney. Triton, no I've had the boat back for a while now, I just had the prop re-done and the lower unit grease changed and a new water pump put in, pretty much just regular maintenance, I had some other stuff done but it was to the boat itself. the motor's a 96 so it's out of warranty.

Dayum Falcon, that's some serious bad news. I mean that really sucks! I'm at LOZ this weekend, but if you need a fix just shoot me a pm. You know where I'm going to be. Just get in the Skeeter and hang on, I'll drive, but we gotta fish your spots!!!!!!!!!!! Image Image
Seriously, that does suck. Good luck with the insurance reptiles.
