2b - Do you have to have an UL reel??? To me the small spooled, loop throwing, PITAs aren't worth having. Get yourself a 6' rod and real man's reel.

Re: Ultra Light Reels
After living in Florida for 10 years. These fish around here are feel pussy's on the end of my line. I like the Ultra Light as it provides me more challenge. Makes me feel like I got a big one.
And no I am not talking about a strap on.

What do you consider to be a real man's reel ?

Garcia 6500C or a Penn 209
Seriously now, I really wouldn't own another openface UL. They are a more likely to throw loops than say Cardinal 100 series reel, or other similar sized reels, especially w/ a full spool. I spent more time unpicking birdsnests with the last one owned than fishing with.(Well not quite but it was bad)Anywho, like I said, just my .02

Re: Ultra Light Reels
I picked up a couple Quantum rod/reel combos and they are nice. Find one that you can order a couple of extra spools for, then spool up 2#, 4# and 6 or 8# and you'll be set for anything.

Re: Ultra Light Reels
UL's are fun,but ditto on the wide spools, those thin ones create a lot of coils!

Re: Ultra Light Reels
Let me put it this way. I don't do, or as of yet have not done the lake deal. I generally do my fishing in the creeks and small rivers for smallmouth. I don't have the nest problem with the ul reels. Which also allow me to half cast and lobs nicely. Do you all still feel the same about the direction ?

Re: Ultra Light Reels
To me, an Ultra Light is for mono string sizes under 4lb. You will have a lot more problems if you put 4lb or 6lb on an UL than if you keep it under 4lb. It helps to spool the UL, or at least in my experience, to only 1/4 full (15 - 30 yards or a few yards more than you can cast your most often used UL bait): this greatly reduces nest problems and it's far easier (and cheaper) to resolve when they happen. Having an extra spool or two, if possible, is also a good ideal.

2B, I like to do alot of creek fishing also, and I love ultralights for that. I have alot more control with a little spinning reel than a little closed face reel when it comes to ULs, no doubt about it. Ditto what BB said.

Re: Ultra Light Reels
2B....If you really want a fine, small and light spinning reel, and don't mind paying for it, get a Shimano Stradic MGF 1000... They are pricey but I have one and it is the absolutely finest spinning reel I've ever owned. The same reel but in the 2500 model is the same size and weight but will hold more line. (It's all in the depth of the spool).
These things have a magnesium frame and only weigh about 8 oz's. Expensive but something that will last you the rest of your life... One more thing. The spool diameter is just slightly larger then a true ultra-lite reel. I've found I have less line problems with the slightly bigger spool......

Re: Ultra Light Reels
Thanks HC, glad you understand. That makes me feel like more of a man.
TR,
That is exactly what I was looking for. I don't mind spending a bit of a wad on something like this. I am headed in next week and will more than likely take your advice. Thank you.

Re: Ultra Light Reels
Right now I gots a Quantum Micro on each of my two UL rods. After 2 years and a couple dozen hours of use, both can still hold their own, but do reflect some wear.
Wife uses a Shimano 1000 Spirex (what I'd call "Light" action) as her UL set up.

I have a 12 foot crappie rod w/a zebco classic 11t.It mounts under the rod and has a trigger release mounted foward of the reel.Use it to catch bait and it works just fine for me.Due to the lenght of the rod,I don't have to cast too much.
