Bait Holders

Post by outdoorworld » July 20th, 2004, 2:11 pm

I have been useing Sonnies Catfish Bait and trying to use these rubber bait holders with the holes in the sides and a treble hook at the end .. Image
What is the best way to get the soft bait in the bait holders ?? Got to be a better way than i was doing by rolling the bait holder into the soft bait.

1st off, welcome Outdoorworld.

To answer your question: Take a big ol mouth full, chew on it until it's moist and mushier then shoot it into the bait holder through a straw. Then plug it with the firmer stuff straight from the jar.

Your welcome, and the advise; well, it was the best I had. Image

Now, I've heard talk that thar Sonnies bait was some pretty darn good stuff. But, I'm more of a bass fisher myself... Image. Sooner or later some cat nut will proly give you some good advise.

But since we are on the subject of cat bait, and awaiting a solid reply to question #1: I was a reading in some recent issue of some Missouri hunting/fishing mag about folks using Bubble Yum bubble gum as cat bait, I chit you not..

Any of you cat folks got any input about that ?

I bought a package of ice cream sticks, in the craft section, at Wally World and I use them to push the holder into the bait and push what I can into the holder.

Make sure to keep a crap towel around to dry the worm off each time before you dip it again. It's important not to get the water in the bait and it will help it stick 10 times better to a dry worm.

Two Tall ... Thats something I hadn't thought about.. I had tryed the bait holder for the first time on the Gasconade River last Monday and did good fishing for no longer than i was there,
But I knew they had to be a better way to apply that Sonnies Bait to the bait holder and to get it to stick better.
You all had helped alot... Thanks

Instead of drying them off,buy 10 or so .Rig w/an egg sinker above a snap swivel.Just change them out and hang to dry.I like to replace the treble w/a wide gap worm hook.Sonnys is great for pan size cats, never caught bigger than a 5#er,but it will fill your stringer.Put on ice in thr summer, warm on the radiator in the winter.

In cool weather mix vegtable oil with the bait and make a runny batch. That solves cool weather firmness issues. But any dipbait starts to fail below 60 degree water temps. It doesn't emulsify in the water and spread scent.

Dave, looking at those rigs, I'd probably go out and buy me a couple of plastic brillo pads and cut pieces off and attach to my choice of hook. They look good, just not sure how cost-effective!
