May be a stupid question
Does anyone notice if crappie fillets have a different texture during hot summertime?

Hunter91----To me the meat is not nearly as good when they are caught in the warm water. They almsot become mushie to me. I dont keep them after about the first week of june due to this------Personal preferance only!

Pman, you are right as far as I am concerned. When the water is hot I put my fish directly on ice and not in the live well except when on Taneycomo. That seems to help keep the meat firm. When I have put them in the live well they do seem to get mushy because even though it is running it is taking in warmer surface water and they usually die in a little while.

Thanks for the info.

10 or 20 lbs of ice vs. 20 gallons of water in the livewell is a HUGE difference esp. for those of us that run small boats. I haven't placed a fish in a livewell for years. Put them all on ice by the time you are done fishing for the day and clean the boat up they are nice and firm, easier to clean. heck if you are tired throw one more bag on top and clean them the next day.

When you catch big fish in big numbers it is tough to keep them alive in a livewell. I know a majority of fisherpeople could not fathom that kind of fishing but a few of us in this world do. I'm sorry you are in the majority of those folks.

Bruce,
Got to watch him close. He has cost me one duck mount and 1 largemouth mount so far this year and almost a smallmouth mount but I talked him out of that one
