.22-250 loads for deer

Post by DES » December 4th, 2005, 1:18 pm

A buddy of mine recently had neck surgery and doesn't think he can handle the recoil of his .30-06 for the antlerless season. He asked me if I could load something up for his .22-250 that would work on deer. I'm leaning towards the Nosler 60 gr Partition but don't have any practical experience with it. Anyone have any other suggestions for suitable bullets?

BTW, I don't want this to turn into a debate on using .22 CF's on deer, I'd prefer he use something bigger but he will use this whether I help him or not.

I also believe there is a 55grn TBBC, but that is about as good as you can do.

I have a buddy that hunts with 55grn Hornady softpoints, and kills deer dead.

I have a load for my 22-250 that I was going to let my wife use, it is a 63GR. sierra semi pointed bullet and 32.5 Grs of IMR4064. If he uses the 22-250 he is going to almost have to do a head or neck/spinal shot, I am not trying to sway him away from the 22-250 but a lung shot will not result in a good blood trail and probably no exit hole. Let me know how things work out.

You can still make heart/lung shots on broadside deer, and kill them quickly, but don't count on a blood trail.

I know a 7yr old girl who shot and killed two deer with a .223 this past season with heart/lung shots. It can be done effectively, but you need to place shots with precision.

We have taken several deeer with the .223 remington. The Nosler 60gr Partition is an excellant bullet. We have found that the 63gr WWPP is equally effective and half the price and is our current bullet of chioce.

Before finding the Nosler and the PP I loaded some 60gr Hornady SP, and they were effective also.

BTW-most deer taken with our 223's have been heart/lung shots.

Thanks for all the replies, he decided to sit out the antlerless season and heal up so I don't need to load anything for him.
