My Morel " Barometer "

Post by Duck Me Runnin » April 10th, 2006, 9:19 am

Says that it's time.......... if you know where to look.

I know of a solitary ash tree on a S. facing hill that overlooks the Mo. river in St. Chuck. co. It ain't a sack fillin' spot, but it's the most reliable morel barometer I have.

I just picked 2 yellows about 4" tall. They had been there at least a day. It ain't too early to check the bottoms, or a S. facin' hill. Image

Fresh ground Italian/Bambi sausage, morels sauteed in butter, and a bigassed salad.............. it's what's for dinner on this fine April day. Image Image

Got me a "indicator" tree like that. Actually Dad showed it to me when I was a kid. There has been at least one mushroom by it for as long as I can remember and it isn't too damm far where we "bumped" into each other last turkey season. Image Image Image Image

J.D.,

I stumbled on to this tree over ten years ago. same deal, ALWAYS at least a couple.

I don't have the " maturity " to have been checkin' the same tree for as long as you have. Image Image

In Central MO, if you aren't along a creek or river it's dry as helll. If we don't get some rain soon, it's going to be a hard year. Time to put on the wheels.

I'm taking my first walk this morning.
May be a little dry but everything else looks right.

My early spots are bare. Not green enough in the hills. Too dry in the creeks.

My boy's babysitter went out last night and filled a plastic grocery sack. The majority of them were reds, softball size or bigger. But she had a handful of small greys. She had about 15-20 little greys and litterally it was just a hanful. Biggest one was MAYBE 2" and smallest was 1/4"!! Image

Temps in the low to mid 80's all this week, but if we don't get some rain in mid-MO the temps aren't going to matter.
