fly rod crappie!
Yesterday, the 14th, was such a pretty day I had to get on some water somewhere. I tied on a # 10, black, yellow and white Clouser and hammered the crappie at a little local lake. Anyone else into panfish yet?

Re: fly rod crappie!
try some 1/80-1/100 oz jigs tied whatever way you like.(if you can find bigger than average hooks 10,8 + etc) the added weight gives a little faster action to the lure, and sometimes really spices things up! the jig action slower than the spinning rod tackle, but faster than streamers, a good place to be! i've fished jigs heavey as 1/64 and 1/32 oz, but you have to watch the back cast, sometimes the weight of the jig itselve will break 4lb line.
i've caught some big fish on small jigs, especially pre-spawn.
if you tye, try a woolybugger on a 1/80 or 1/64 oz jig, white, black, olive, brown are deadly, should be illegal! lol. you can also fish 6-8 feet deep with a jig and floating line, if you wait for that little sucker to sink, can't do that as fast with a streamer.
good fishing!

Re: fly rod crappie!
I was fishing the James River last weekend, and the crappie were nailing little white flies that were landing on the surface. Some of the crappie were even skimming the surface with their mouths open to suck up the flies. Of course, I didn't happen to have the fly rod with me.
I ended up catching them on microjigs with spinning tackle, but I sure wish I would have gotten them with a fly.

dave-t.....thanks for the info. I've never tried anything you listed but I sure will! A person will wait forever for an un-weighted streamer on floating line to get down. I can appreciate the "back cast" part. Ain't that why it's also sometimes called "chunck & duck"?...nuthin' like a # 16 hook in your upper ear huh!!....hehehe

I went to my friend's pond up near Hannibal and slayed 10" crappie on a gray clouser. The little buggers are definately a blast on light tackle.

After we turkey hunt we hit the pond with poppers and some soft hackles for bluegill. Last year we had fish sandwhiches and fresh mushrooms for lunch in turkey camp.
