Warmouth, You Got Your Wish (Sort of)

Hey-

I didn't know if you all saw it, but in the February Conservationist, MDC noted that the atlatl has been added as an approved method of taking non-game fish. I have attached the text below.

"Hunting and fishing methods

The atlatl, an historic hunting tool, may be used to take nongame fish following the same regulations as when gigging fish and to take small game. An atlatl is a rod or narrow board used to launch a 5-to-8-foot dart. The dart is launched by a throwing motion of the arm. The Missouri Atlatl Association presented the Regulations Committee and Conservation Commission with videos, demonstrations and other data showing how the atlatl works, its accuracy and the skills needed to use this primitive method.

Darts used in hunting may not contain drugs, poison, chemical or explosives."

How long do you think it will be before they extend that to deer hunting? Image

My atlatl is in the shop, but dang if I'm not going to call the guy right now!

Actually, what type of wood would a guy use for a spear/dart shaft on an atlatl? I don't think the material for the thrower would matter near as much as the darts

BTW, here is some links for a site that specializes in atlatls. Apparently the darts are made of ash (wood); they have a store with atlatls and atlatl accessories on there:

Here is a story with pics on spearing gar in Florida:

"I quickly closed the distance between me and the line until I was just within range and cast a dart at a high angle and as hard as I could, leading the deer I hoped to hit by thirty yards. The shot, although very long, felt good as I watched the deer and dart converge 55 yards distant. "

Hmmm.

Oh chit...I can tell the wheels are turning. Dave - maybe you can make some darts with mother-in-law points and talk LA into being your moving target so you can practice those moving shots.

She'd never go for it. I'd have to practice on ferral cats or something.

I have a problem coon, but I'm breaking out the artillery for that sumbich, no messing around with spears and chit.
