Catchin' Stockers

Post by Budman » April 7th, 2007, 9:10 pm

Just got back from a little excursion with (not so)Great (extremely)White (lazy)Hunter and our families at Bennett Springs. I believe he caught 2 fish in 2 days, cleaned zero fish, told 2,357 lies, got made fun of endlessly, and got thouroughly out-feeeshed by lil GWH.

Anyhoo....Here's my questions...If the MDoC is gonna keep the trout limits @ 4, when are they(trout peoples) gonna start stocking bigger trout? We did catch some nice ones this weekend, but on a trip to Taney any stocker is tiny. Why is that? Is their hatchery not caught up to where it should be? Can they not get their trout to grow in the hatchery? Are they dumb? What is the problem?

If anyone has a sensible answer, I'd be interested to hear. I like fishing both, but the disparity in stockers is really shocking.

No smitty, I do not want to compare Image on the wall, nor do I want to hear some PhD type ramblings about some previous fishing trip you went on where you caught thirty-five 8lb. stockers, but they somehow got away, only for you to find them a week later.

That is all. Carry on. Image
I'm gonna get my kicks before the whole shithouse goes up in flames!!!! Alright, Alright, Alright

I'm confident GWH will continue this stellar performance into the IL turkey hunting excursion. I can't wait.

MY answer to you:

It is known fact that the bigger the trout the the more creek wise he is. Therefore it takes a smarter fisherman to catch him. The smaller the trout, well you don't have to be sharpest knife in the drawer to catch one. BUT two fish in two days a Bennett ??????? Image Image Image Image Image Image

Primordial ooze could have caught more. Image

The real answer for Taney is:

-The hatchery is undergoing renovation for the last 3 yrs and all the raceways are not in production. The AVERAGE stocker is 12.5" with no more than 10% under 10" and no more than 10% over 14". If you are consistenly catching shorts???? See MY answer ..... Image

-The bigger stockers end up at the trout parks where they get a very short life expectancy. In taney they grow fast and have a better chance to get "big."

We consistently catch 15 to 17 inch fish at Montauk on fly rod and micro jigs under a float with frog hair tippet. Most of the fish there are hatched and grown there and they do a good job of growing their fish. As the summer gets here the lines have to get lighter and lighter. GWH was probably using 20lb test on a bass rod with a big bait. He doesn't know squat about trout fishing.

And as usual, no thread can go untouched by the gaymaster himself, MOC.

I'd have to echo what RB said. Our trip to Montauk was excellent. We caught only one fish under 12" the whole weekend, and all the rest were in the 15" to 18" range. I'm not really sure if Gay White Hunter could even catch a cold.
McLintock, great party, but no whiskey. We go home.

CC you and I know how to trout fish and GWH doens't so he is major trout challenged as evidenced by his own fishing buddy's post. I met little GWH and he has great potential as an outdoorsman....must take after his mom.

Blow it out your butts....I spent most of my time helping out Flake Jr. I didn't even take my rod with me, when Flake Jr. and I fished below Whistle Bridge on Saturday.

I do believe they stocked bigger fish Friday night.

I wouldn't take my rod with me after a showing like that. He11, I think I could catch more than 2 fish and I suck.

I didn't use a marinade Budman. If you remember, I just soaked the meat in egg and milk and then rolled it in flour. Hit it with salt and pepper and you are good to go.
