Squirrel Season

Post by Rafe Hollister » May 18th, 2007, 3:02 pm

Squirrel season starts May 26. That's a week from tomorrow. I promised Rafe, Jr. a squirrel hunt this year. He'll be 5 on June 20 so it'll be interesting to see how well he does. I want his woodsmanship to be good enough within a couple years that he can go for a deer hunt or two. His grandpa is 65 and the knees aren't too good anymore so I'd like them to have a few hunts together before he has to quit hunting.

I am actually planning an openning morning squirrel hunt. First time since I was a teenager. As far as I know I have nothing else going on, so sqwacks it is.

It's been a while. I honestly don't recall if I liked it or not. However, I'm sure if I fried it... it would be edible.

Dave: You are only the 4th person in my life that I have ever heard call them squanks or sqwacks. I love a mess of young squirrels. It doesn't get much better than that.

A good mess of fried young squirrels is tough to beat. Frog legs can compete, however.

It isn't very difficult at all to beat, nor are frog legs.

MOYuppie would rather have tofu, or quiche.

Frog legs are the best eating wild game, period. If you don't know that, you've been mistreated and neglected your whole life.

Rabbits and quail are next on my list, but young squirrels are pretty good.

Deep fry some young turtle. You might have a new favorite.

I may snuff a few limb chickens this weekend myfelf. The CZ .22 that I won over a year ago hasn't caused any bloodshed. That's unacceptable. Image

Like a couple of you mentioned, I'll be after the nice young gray rats. There's not much worse than trying to skin ( or eat ) one of those 4 pound fox squirrels with nutsacks that look like wallet leather. Image

Me and my 3 year old boy went out Memorial day evening killed a couple of squirrels and caught about 200 ticks. I fried them up this week and they were pretty good. My wife wouldn't touch them but the two kids ate some.

I've never fried ticks before.

Kind of crunchy, unless you get a dog tick in the pile. Image Image
