?? about MO River

Post by nvrgivup » May 13th, 2004, 3:10 pm

What is your favorite bait?
What do you use in the afternoon?
Do you fish behind wing dikes?
Do you fish fast or slow current?
Cut bait or live bait?
Are fishing near pilings worth a crap?

Kutter, say a feller has a 17' 100guage all weld jon with a 40hp jet. No experience boating a major river, never even been on a major river such as the MO. About how many beers would your recommend a semi anal-retentive person drink before going out there ? Should they even be out there ? If not, how best to get the experience required ?

I figure after 17 beers you'll be too busy peeing to worry about launching the boat!

Bornbad, your close enough you could go up and put in at Bonnots Mill access and practice on the Osage. Good cats there and your about a mile from the MO river when your comfortable with it.
Tip one, forget the beers till after.
Tip two wear your lifejacket at all times.
Tip 3 stay away from any moveing barges.
Tip 4 keep a sharp knife next to any anchor lines you may have out.
Tip 5 is use heavy tackle, them itty bitty bass rods wont cut it...lol

Go ahead, only thing you need to always bring with you, is a healthy dose of fear.

Proly pass for a few more years on it, 'Dont like mixing fear with fishing. The Osage is right there at my limit and I prefer it being low and slow.

Common Sense is the only requirment to have a great time on the Missouri River.

Water is dangerous everywhere, just because the Mighty Mo is moving doesn't make it impossible to enjoy. It's really not the least bit intimidating if you pay attention.

BornBad - just remember several men have been pulled out with snagging hooks days later, and they were still wearing life jackets. Find an old rat and accompany them for a while. Then re-evaluate.

SB has the right idea. Get with someone who is experienced in runnin the river an spend some time with him. Once you learn how to "read" the river an respect the fact that if you make a mistake it can kill you it is a piece of cake. Image

Born bad, keep in mind any river will kill you if you don't respect it. It's just that the MO and MISS have a little bit more 'attitude' then most...lol

Oh I respect water, been banged up once or twice and sore for weeks underestimating my own strengths against water in a few other recreation activities.

It's those Image whippings water has gave me that keeps the ol' fart box tight, especially in waters I know I caint swim in.
