What an opener!!!

Post by Limbshot » September 17th, 2018, 4:35 pm

My single goal going into deer season 2018/19 was to put my wife on her first ever archery buck! Well less than two hours into her season we made that happen. Despite the heat Saturday evening, we decided to give it a go! We set up on the south side of our east food plot and with an ESE wind, we had a perfect set up. At 6:30 I looked out across the plot as a spike buck walked into it and started feeding. I kept seeing movement behind him and knew there was another deer coming. Shortly later out stepped a decent 8 that would be great for her first archery buck. After watching them feed for over 10 minutes, the bigger deer finally broke from the far end of the plot and began walking to our mineral site to the left of us. At a distance of 40 yards he dropped his head to pick up some oats and she drew back. he began walking again and stopped perfectly at 25 yards. Jamie released the arrow and delivered an absolutely perfect shot! Her arrow zipped through the buck and he jumped and whirled around, ran back to where they entered the field and disappeared into the brush. Seconds later we heard him crash and then we both proceeded to lose our minds!!! Moments later I got down and walked over to where they left the field. I found great blood walked about 10 yards into the woods and saw a big white belly just down the hill!!! SO EXTREMELY proud of her. This has been a LONG TIME coming. She finally got her first archery deer last year with a doe, but this hunt was incredible. It was also the first hunt I have ever filmed so I have 12 minutes of awesome footage that culminates with a perfect shot!

I also took this still from a frame by frame examination of the footage. This is a great pic of her lighted nock right before it disappears on its way through the deer's ribcage. AWESOME!!!

Congratulations to her Russ. Awesome that you got it on film. That's a nice buck to take this early in the season. Now its your turn.

Keep the daughter shooting and getting better. After seeing what mom did she just might jump in the game pretty soon. You guys are one hunting/fishing family. Congrats again.

I have found that women are often easier to teach and better at learning the shooting sports. The end result often produces a better shot than the boys. Hopefully my daughter follows that same pattern.

I don't completely agree on that. It depends on the individual. My buddies son was a very good hunter by 8 and so have other boys I have hunted with. However, to your point boys do have a short attention span and generally declare expertise in something before they really know what they're doing. Regardless, kudos to you for getting the ladies in your family in the sport.

Very good point Dave. It does also depend on if they are completely brand new. Way easier to train a complete newbie than someone who has already learned bad habits.

I think I am going to give it go this evening. Cooler front moving in, humidity is dropping. Should have them up and moving a bit I would think.

I had two youngsters pass by at 15 yards pretty early and that was it. Due to soccer, I didn't hunt anymore this past weekend. My daughter has been shooting really well with her bow so I am going to try and get her out this weekend for her first bow hunt. We will see how that goes. I am excited.
