I always had a fondness for the old 222 Remington. If I were a serious yodel dog hunter I would probably still own one. The 223 has pretty much supplanted that grand old cartridge and for good reason. My primary varmint killer now is a 22-250 in a Ruger # 1. The cartridge can be overly destructive on furbearers, especially fox, unless one chooses their reloads carefully. As I don't hunt song dogs for fur I don't much worry about how much damage my rifle does. If there were enough fox around to hunt seriously for fur I'd own a 22 Hornet. I've never worked with that cartridge and even tho it has a reputation for being fickle I am convinced I would like it in a fine, short action Mauser.

I don't follow modern firearms much anymore, what is this 204 Doniphan menitoned?

STURM, RUGER ANNOUNCES FIVE RIFLES
IN NEW 204 RUGER CARTRIDGE

November 6, 2003

Sturm, Ruger is proud to introduce five rifle models for 2004 in an exciting new caliber: the 204 RUGER. This small, fast, and efficient new cartridge is the result of another joint development effort between Sturm, Ruger and Hornady Manufacturing Company. The 204 RUGER shares the same case head and overall length cartridge as the 223 Remington, but uses a slender new 20 caliber, 32 grain, V-MAXTM bullet. The 204 RUGER?s bullet has an extremely efficient ballistic coefficient of 0.192, and an amazing muzzle velocity of 4,225 feet per second.

When compared directly with either the 22-250 Remington or the 220 Swift, the 204 RUGER offers higher muzzle velocity and flatter trajectory. Because the 204 RUGER cartridge achieves a higher velocity with less propellant than either the 22-250 Remington or the 220 Swift, this new cartridge does not compromise barrel life. The 204 RUGER also offers lower recoil and muzzle report than comparable high-velocity, sub-caliber ammunition. Its conventional case shape avoids feeding problems and increased rearward bolt thrust associated with short and super short magnum cartridges.

Because this new caliber provides significant benefits for varmint hunters and target shooters alike, Sturm, Ruger is introducing five rifle models chambered for the 204 RUGER. These include three bolt action rifles and two single shot rifles. The Ruger M77 MKII bolt action rifles include: the M77R in blued steel with a cut-checkered American walnut stock; the KM77RLFP Ultralight All-Weather in stainless steel with a synthetic stock and a light contour barrel; and the Target Grey KM77VT Target rifle in stainless steel with a brown, laminated wood stock, heavy target barrel, and two-stage target trigger. Ruger No.1 single shot models include the No. 1 Standard in blued steel with a cut-checkered American walnut stock and the No. 1 Stainless Varminter in stainless steel with a black, laminated stock.

that hornady 204 is one sweet puppy, it uses the varmint express bullet, cant remember the specs. but it is supposed to cook rounds at around... don't hold me to it, but i would guess 3-4000 fps

DR-Glad to hear your leg isn't serious. I prefer some of these loads.

.223, 50gr v-max/24.3 gr.H335,

.22-250, 55gr. CT Ball.ST/32.7gr. Varget,

.25-06, 87gr.v-max/46.9 gr. H380,

.308, 125gr. Nos BT/42.0 gr RE-15,

I prefer the .250 and the .06, but all the above listed are very well suited for any varmit hunting from prarie dog to Coyote. One of my Best freinds uses a .243 Prarie doggin and it is a great caliber as well.

As far as the .17, I'm not a great fan of them but to each his own. That same buddy went squirrel hunt with me and another fella last year and the .17HMR just wolluped the tree rat. I mean there is'nt a big margin for error. What i'm saying is if you go with the .17 be sure to sight it in at whatever range you are shooting. Because if you have it sighted in for say 100-150 yards then it may be 1-2 inches lower at say 25-50 yards. That means no loins will be salvaged off the rat. I would say the same holds true for the .204.

You and me both there CNF...

Them loads sounds purrty nice to me.. The thing with the .204 is that it's sposed to have almost a flat trigictory.. SO maybe because of that it wouldn't have such a small room for error?? I don't know I haven't found the gun anywhere around here to test fire so I don't know yet..
Like to hear from someone that knows though..

the ruger 204 is supposed to shoot faster that a 222 swift at around 4225 fps with a 32gr. v-max bullet. leading to a 200 yard zero, .6 in high at 100, and 4.2 in low at 300 yards. that screams varminter to me

Ruger does their research the same as they do everything else.....thoroughly. While I won't go out and buy the first 204 that lands in the neighborhood, and probably never will buy one, I'd bet this round doesn't suffer the same fate as the 220 Swift as great a round as the Swift is.

Same thoughts I kinda had JBman. It should hold a dang good really nice trajectory if zeroed in at 200yrds.
I wouldn't mind to have one in my safe.

i plan on gettin one. just not now. I'll wait till more rounds evolve for it. kindof like my 17, waited a couple of years and quality and quantity of ammo seems to have gone up while prices have gone down.

17 Remington tops my list followed by the 22-250. I've used 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 222 and 223, and the 243, but like the 17 for most Song Dog callin. Its been years since I shot any Prairie dogs, but with ease of finding cases, powder consumption and so forth its hard to beat a 223 for it.

Time will tell if the new 204 is as fickle as the 17 when it comes to cleaning. I do pretty well with mine, 17, up to about 20 rounds if the bullets are coated. If they aren't then the velocity starts rising at about the 8th round and at ten it starts getting to high. My 17 , by the way, runs over 4100 and devastates a Song Dog.
