Best Huntin Dog

Post by BornBad » June 3rd, 2004, 4:30 pm

I ever owned was a border collie, 20 years ago.. I know, I know, a border collie is not exactly a known huntin dog, but it she had the heart for it. Whether it was treeing squirrels, running rabbits and deer or jumpin quail and turkeys, it was all done for the hunt... I never trained her for any of that stuff, was all instinct or somptin. Fugging broke my heart when I had to put her down for running the neighbor's cattle to exhaustion.

Ya buddy Image Nowdays, I go out with just 3 or 4 shells. 'might use one of them, two of them if the wind wasn't in my favor. 'but Back then, with that bitch, it was the box of 'em. I recall usually wishing I had more bullwits too. Image

Hated it when I ran out of bullwits, ever notice there is twice as much game to be had once you run out of bullwits ? Image

Recently I lost the best hunting dog I ever had. I am looking for a replacement and found a breeder that has Red and White Setters. Has anyone ever had one or know anything about them? Sure could use some advice.

Sorry Country Gal, but I don't know anyone that uses setters for hunting. I can give you some weblinks about them though:

My favorite hunting dogs are labs. Yes, I know that is pretty boring but I like their versatility and disposition.

I have thought about setters also, but I am not into really long-haired dogs.

Exactly what do you know about dogs???

Labs is as good as they come, everyone should have 2 or 3. I hope they stay the most registered dog in America. Leave the real dogs alone.

We had three britney spaniels while growing up in Central Illinois. They were the chit, well trained, and just plain sic for Pheasent and Quail hunting.

I will say one thing. It took my german shepard / blue heeler mix almost a minute to kill the last Boykin that strayed into the yard. So...they are pretty tough.
